CM9 r9

If you haven't already checked XDA, or are to lazy to read through the thread, CM9.1 r9 was released at the beginning of the month. I didn't want to write anything about it until I ran it for two weeks, so here is my review.

Hows the speed of the ROM?
While it isn't as fast as the newer phones that have come out (damn, technology moves quick), it is very liquid like in it's operation. Small tidbits of lag here and there, but overall, its smooth.
What about the battery life?
The battery will last from when I get up to work, and be around 15% when I get home. It lasts me, practically, until the end of the day. However, I barely use my phone when I'm out. Moderate use is moderate use (i.e. no autosync, check e-mails and texts periodically, a phone call or two, moderate browsing).
Overall Quality of the ROM?
I'm quite happy how far the development of this phone has gone. From simple, debloated ROMs to full overhauls of the OS. I would give this ROM an 8/10, simply because it's smooth, but there are still a few bugs to fix. Overall, great job.

CM9 Stable, now officially supported

CM9 went from Alpha 6 to "Stable". Don't let the name fool you though, a lot of the bugs from Alpha 6 are still prevalent in this release.

The current buglist:
- If you use Face Unlock, I have experienced an issue where sometimes the screen will go "dark" when attempting to unlock the phone, requiring a battery reset. This is infrequent, but only Face Unlock causes this problem.
- Recording in camcorder @ 1080 doesn't work. (Other modes are fine, we have not removed 1080p from options yet).
- Lights issues (more than one):
-- Function keys on physical keyboard do not light up (CAPS/ALT), but the buttons work.
-- Backlight on keyboard works most of the time, but can randomly go dark.
- Random battery statistics issues. Not all people have this issue, it seems specific to the battery you use.
- Google+ Hangouts do not work right now.
- Very occasional radio (4g and sometimes bluetooth/wifi) dropoff/reset. Some have reports a SIM card message requesting power reset, which can be cleared by hitting back. Other times, turning data on/off resolves issue.

This was pulled straight from XDA. As for the stable release, it seems a bit more peppy than Alpha 6. Definitely my new daily driver.

So I've been out of the loop for a while:

Wow, it's like Christmas all over again. I'm going to have to spend some time testing out these ROMs. Good job to all the developers for giving us more selection. Here's a list of the ROMs that I'm going to have to test over the next couple days:

  • Pyr-o-Ice 1.0.2 (now stable from my last post)
  • MIUI v0.1 (tried downloading, doesn't work; hopefully gets a mirror soon)
  • Virtuous Quattro Alpha 3 (long awaited release from the virtuous team, kinda unstable, but will report everything)
Hopefully I can get all this out. ICS looks sweeeeet.

Pyr-o-Ice ICS 0.9.0 (Android 4.0.3)

Let's take a look at this version of ICS for the myTouch 4G Slide!

The first of it's kind, this ROM is receiving a lot of attention from end users and developers alike.
What works:
- Call voice, SMS
- Keyboard, hw keyboard rotation, softkeyboard when slided back
- 3D
- Camera (with SW jpeg encoding, gemini off!), tap focus, 8MPx, HTC camera app included for that
- SMP architecture (Scoring 59 FPS on nenamar2 here on stock speed)
- Audio
- WiFi (read TIPS, second boot and Add network is needed!!)
- Mobile data
- Bluetooth (at least i've tested BT stereo audio and avrc)
- SDCard
- Market
- Gapps preinstalled (all works, gtalks video chat works!)
- GPS partially works if SIM card is in, but not the compass!
- youtube app
- FM radio
- Keyboard light, cycle though brightness setting if it doesn't trigger at firdt!
- tethering works with OpenGarden! (read TIPS -- doesnt work: the HTC or built-in tethering) GUIDE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=564
- Notification led
- Data usage stats for mobile data
- Face unlocking (System Settings/Security/Screen lock)
- Google Music ICS, streaming
- wired/bt Headset buttons (wired buttons work only with Music apps, not on the call screen)
- usb storage, works only in an automatic way,and YOU NEED TO RUN A SCRIPT, check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=328 , or use a commercial app from market (look for dual mount sd)
- native screenshot (press Power and VolDown exactly at the same time!)
- built-in spell checking (GAPPS 4.0.3 LatinIME is now good)
...

NOT works:
- Camcorder (video recording), and gemini hw jpeg encoding for photos is off
- WiFi calling (reports too poor signal, gonna look into this)
- MMS sending hangs, cant send
- wired Headset buttons when calling (with Google Music app it works!)
- Accelerometer (WON'T FIX, kernel driver incompatible, pyramid kernel config has mpu3050, doubleshot won't start that unit /dev/mpu, probably it's only in htc sensation)
- Gyroscope (WON'T FIX, kernel driver incompatible, pyramid kernel config has mpu3050, doubleshot won't start that unit, probably it's only in htc sensation)
- Compass (WON'T FIX, kernel driver incompatible, pyramid kernel config has mpu3050, doubleshot won't start that unit, probably it's only in htc sensation)
- Facebook full sync: you HAVE to manually merge contacts, no other way known so far
...you tell

Despite a lot of things not really working, the development of this ROM is exciting for the myTouch 4G Slide community. The original developer even included the tricks to using this ROM:
TRICKS HOW TO USE THIS ROM:

- Screen on (trackpad wake replacement): you can press Power button, but the Menu and Back button will also wake the phone (not the trackpad yet, to be fixed in keylayout/keychar).

- WiFi - it will be tricky to get wifi to work. I could make use of it like this:

1. After first install boot, it didnt show right the Wifi networks so
2. Reboot
3. It now shows the networks but simply "Connect" wont work, I had to..
4. Add network instead. Then it connects

- Wifi tethering: use Wireless tether https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether from market, it works

- SDCard will be scanned only on the second boot after fresh install normally, so Music apps will see your music on the second time. After that works as it should.

- Orientation stuck? - as gyroscope is not functional, it's advised to switch off the Auto Rotation, so your orientation can switch back when you push back your keyboard. (thx shady503403 for the insight) Also a handy utility is Orientation Control, check the Useful section.

- symbols symbols key doesn't work, when set in keylayout it makes home button useless and doesn't work itself. Use Alt + Space instead (thx overhauling for the tip)

- Facebook sync: seems it doesn't switch off when you switch the global sync off, go into app instead and switch it off there.

- Forced 2d GPU related info (apps too small sized) (thx Overhauling):

Also, Forcing GPU Rendering under development options may cause some apps to go crazy and show up super, super small (They won't even fit on 1/3 of the screen). But disabling this option makes them go back to normal.... You could observe these effects on the "WordMate" app (And other similar ones).
- Caller ID when incoming call needs screen unlocking - Full Screen Caller ID Lite from market can help the problem, it will override the lock screen.

Tbalden doesn't promise anything on his side of development, and he admitted that he is really only interested in fixing the problems in the ROM for his personal everyday use. Don't fear though, as he has allowed other developers to pick and prod at his release to fix it for the general public.

With this in mind, he has called out all developers who are willing to work with each other to make this ROM stable enough for everyday use. You would be wise to keep your eye out on this ROM, or at least this thread, as they are having a lot of breakthroughs to unlock the full potential of this great phone.

Follow the thread here.

P.S. If you have developing experience, please contribute to this ROM. This is the stepping stone that the myTouch 4G Slide needs to get to bigger and better things =D.

New home for phone reviews, tips, and tricks!

Welcome to the new Rooted Doubleshot blog! I just made this because these posts didn't seem to fit the subject of my other blog (which actually is my randomness taking form in words). Here we will explore what you can do with your Android phone (more specifically the HTC Doubleshot, or as T-mobile brands it: the myTouch 4G Slide).

I also will be working with the Samsung Galaxy S2 (I think), and the HTC Sensation, but until I get a good week with those phones, I won't be able to do any documentation, reviews, or ROM work done.
